Mobile Communications

In this issue of tec.News we deal with aspects of mobile communication, their technical requirements and social implications. Back around 1980, bulky, heavy devices – with analogue technology at that time – marked the beginning of the wireless telephone era for the man in the street. Today we call this “analogue age” the 1st generation.

Around 1990, the 2nd generation of mobile phones ushered in a real revolution with the changeover to digital transmission technology. Year by year, mobile phones became smaller and lighter while their performance increased. The 3rd generation, which is just around the corner, brings us the convergence of voice, data and images, and creates worldwide links between telephone, computers and the Internet.
