The liberalisation of the telephone markets that is underway in industrial nations has led to a growing communications requirement, but also to increased competitive pressure. At the same time new communication networks are being developed with breathtaking speed in South East Asia and South America. The Internet triggered a global boom in data services, but the most sustained changes in infrastructure are a result of the increasing convergence of information and communication technologies. Hitherto separate networks for data, image and voice are now merging, new kinds of multimedia applications are becoming possible.
